Q: How did you decide to have an internet exhibition?

A : It's often asked. Though at the same time, we should reconsider why exhibitions have to be held in such spaces as an art museum, gallery or white-cube? On the premise that this exhibition is created to be seen online. This is not the usual transition of an exhibition from the art gallery. We consistently connect to the internet. We search for images, foreign languages or anything for smooth communication. It feels very natural. Without consciously, our sensitivity must have been changed since the 80s. Internet is often talked as a communication tool, however, it became a part of our brain, thought and creative process. It's something we have to face. The leading IT companies like Amazon and YouTube are literally internet systems. We can easily imagine our lifestyle cannot be valid without them in the near future. This exhibition is simple but the result of facing the internet. We feel very natural about this show. We just curated the outcomes. We would recommend seeing this full-screen.

Q : I see. Now, could you explain your works?

A : First of all, we don't have concepts in our work throughout. We have nothing to appeal. These are about ideas nothing more or less. The idea of “The Cloud” came on a sunny day when having a very relaxing time ─ like turned the audio amplifier on, listening to music and smoking a cigarette. On this soundtrack, we use Morton Feldman's “For Bunita Marcus”.We are not particularly a great fan of contemporary music but had a great feeling towards this track.
"The Theater" is inspired by a Facebook post by an art critic saying "contemporary art is political" when Aichi Triennale 2019 became highly controversial in Japan. Political itself is a complicated subject so we've neverkeen on working on. But it was provoking.
“From Over There” reflects other people’s images from YouTube or Vimeo. Itmight sound strange, but it is more important to receive on here, so this work like circuit or network. We mediate something from the other side of the world. “From Over There” is a passive approach, the subject does not belong to us. It stands in complete contrast to “The Cloud” which is created with our idea and images. And another interesting thing is that “From Over There” is based on hypertext. Naturally writing hypertext minimises shooting or painting process. HTML and CSS are relatively easy but when we are not professional …an amateur, you can easily imagine it takes a long time, can't you. Haha. It is completely different from creating something amusement using hundreds of projectors. It is more self-satisfaction like the world of OTAKU… Haha. We have been working on this “Word“ series for a long time. When we started, we were inspired by Jiro Takamatsu's “These Seven Letters”. Because JiroTakamatsu's “These Seven Letters” carries the biggest problem of two-dimensional work such as painting, photography or film. Well, of course, we can draw without thinking about it but for us, it is hard to ignore. It needs to be valued as a history of Japanese contemporary art.
"Murder" is literally thoughts on murder. War, terrorism and the death penalty are all simple killings in the name of JUSTICE, isn't it? Because of its cruelty, we against the war but killings never eliminated from this world since humankind started communities. On the other hand, there are also statements from the families of the murder victims wishing the death penalty. This is our study of what it means to kill a person. Of course, it is far from a conclusion though.

Q : How do you see the relationship between real space like museums and
galleries and online space?

A : There was an experience of entering Rothko Room at the Tate Gallery in London and it was overwhelming. It wasn't an everyday space at all, it was reality itself. I remember that it was quite a large space, but I felt that it was more spacious and desolate than it actually was. At around the same time, I had a similar experience at Gustave Moreau's museum. This one was an old, not spacious and dim building… remembering climbing up a worn wooden staircase. But this building was fused together with paintings. As one, it was quiet but chaotic at the same time. It was rather perfect. It is possible for Museums and galleries to create a space like that. However, as we mentioned before our sensitivity is changing. Maybe, it is necessary to more creative rather than just displaying or placing art pieces. We need to think about the budget and to review the common sense of the art industry.

Q : What are your plans for the future?

A : This method became more remarkable around 2017. In the beginning, we didn't understand why we were coming up with this. But now, things are slightly sorted therefore we would like to improve more this way. We hav many issues as well. We would love to create a community on the LINK where we can share thoughts or have otaku-like communication. We would appreciate it if you could send us a message from CONTACT.

Q : Thank you very much. Have a nice day!

A : You too. Bye!
